I’m 32, and I’m shy of the way my face looks. It’s terrible! My face, neck and partially shoulders are covered with pimples and blackheads. I turned to a dermatologist, and he said that some blood tests need to be done, still, I’m not sure if it will help my recovery. Can you give me some advice on how to get rid of this horrible acne?

I can understand your despair as I’ve had the same problem during the puberty. Actually, about 50 million Americans face this issue every year. By the way, it’s not rare among women of your age and even older too. 15% of American women deal with acne at an adult age.

You did right that you’ve turned to a doctor but ignoring his advice was a mistake. The results of your blood tests could show if the hormones are the cause of your problem. Hormonal disbalance is quite a common reason for acne in adult women. Birth control pills may be helpful in such a case. They stabilize the levels of the female hormones and gradually your skin condition will get better.

Too oily skin is one more frequent reason for acne. Topical creams and ointments containing salicylic acid, retinoid, benzoyl peroxide or antibiotics are applied in such case. They help to reduce skin oil production and diminish the inflammation of the skin. In case antibiotic is used, it helps to fight the bacteria living on the skin. The effect of such treatment is not quick. You will notice improvements in a month or two, but the game is definitely worth the candles.

If the situation is really tough, you can be recommended taking some drugs. They may be antibiotics or Isotretinoin. The latter may first worsen the situation as it works by speeding up the process of acne maturation. However, after several months, you’ll see another person in the mirror.

There are also some cosmetic procedures that can help to deal with acne. Turn to the dermatologist as proper treatment can be prescribed only after your skin examination.
